Here is a book you cannot tell by its cover, a cover entirely occupied by three large question marks, under the title Inquiry. The content of the book says nothing at all about questioning or its like (e.g., hypothesizing, problem solving), and little if anything about inquiry as understood, howsoever variously, in educational thought and practice. I say this as a caution, not a criticism. Inquiry is a work of philosophy, and it is about beliefs. It presents an elegant, and technical, argument for Stalnaker’s novel position on the abstract structure of the enterprise of forming and revising beliefs about how the world is. Apart from an initial chapter of exposition, the narrative proceeds by argument: identifying a selected point in Stalnaker’s position; raising problems, objections, and criticisms to that point as treated by contrasting theories; and defending Stalnaker’s position while also affirming that of the others.
