I must immediately confess to a positive bias toward the book under review. Ever since my 1949 experimental study of the effects of-cooperation and competition, which was conducted in M.I.T. classrooms, I have been convinced that a cooperative context for education is profoundly more beneficial for students than a competitive one. Apart from writing a quickly forgotten paper about the educational implications of my theorizing and research on cooperation/competition and giving a number of talks, I did little directly to bring about any change in educational practice. Fortunately, a number of other psychologists have systematically attempted to introduce cooperation into education and to do research on its effects. They are well represented in this book. Among the growing number of scholars contributing to the development of both knowledge and practice in this area are several who have made seminal contributions as leaders of productive centers of research and training on cooperative...
