Suzanne Romaine is an American, recently appointed Merton Professor of English Language at Oxford, the position formerly held by Tolkien. She is known for her work in the history of English, but her M.Litt. thesis at Edinburgh was on linguistic variability in the speech of Edinburgh school children. The conceptual link between the history of a language and the development of language in a child is the relationship—in both contexts—between intrasystem variability at one point in time and systemic change over time. Romaine is not the first person to discuss this connection,1 but hers is the first book to focus on variability and its implications for the development of “communicative competence.” It is also unusual in focusing on the language, and language development, of children of school age.
