 ‘Where, in the helter-skelter pace of the school day, is there time for the probing, experimentation, dialogue and reflection that contribute to genuine learning”? asks Lucy Calkins (p, 24). She insists that to become better writers and learners, students need the “luxury of time.” “If they are going to have the chance to do their best and then to make their best better, they need long blocks of time” (p. 23). In her new book, The Art of Teaching Writing, Calkins advocates the establishment of “writers’ workshops” in classrooms of all ages, including kindergarten. The emphasis is on daily time for writing, personal topic choice, and revision through conferences held with peers and teachers: ‘When we invite children to choose their form, voice and audience as well as their subject, we give them ownership and responsibility for their writing. . . .
