New Studies in Education: The Improvement of Intelligence Testing

by Harold H. Abelson 1927

CAN intelligence tests, or mental tests in general, be made more effective by the application of certain relatively objective methods of choosing test items and of scoring item responses?1 The techniques referred to are modifications of those used by McCall in the construction of his Multi-Mental Scale.2 McCall has been able to show that these methods operate successfully with the peculiar type of test elements contained in the Multi-Mental Scale and under certain experimental conditions. The tests employed in the present study are of the more usual character, as are the circumstances accompanying the application of the devices for improvement. The essential problem, then, becomes the discovery of evidences to show under what conditions these techniques will operate satisfactorily. A host of relatively minor problems must be omitted from this summary because of limitations of space.
