War and violence in our society should be of concern to all responsible educators. This book addresses the problem as it is reflected in the play of young children. The authors are concerned about the proliferation of high-tech war toys that may shape in imitative and unnatural ways the normal inclinations of children to play at war. These war toys, in their design and in the minds of young children, are connected to images of war and violence viewed on television. Data supporting the content of this book are gleaned from questionnaires and in-depth interviews with a wide range of parents, children, and teachers as well as from observations of children’s play.
