Everyone has heard James A. Garfield's definition of an ideal college: "Mark Hopkins on one end of a log, and a student on the other." Few realize that the tribute was paid during a controversy in which the man who had been president of Williams College for a generation was under bitter attack and the college itself was in dangerous decline. Even fewer have any idea what either Hopkins or Williams was like during the period of his leadership. Professor Rudolph tells us in a book which, although he is now on the Williams staff, betrays little admiration for either subject. Hopkins was made president of his alma mater in 1836 faute de mieux.
