Investigations Concerning the Murdoch Sewing Scale

by Clara M. Brown 1922

When the monograph on The Measurement of Certain Elements of Hand Sewing and the accompanying scale by Dr. Katharine Murdoch were published in 1919 by Teachers College, the writer studied them with considerable interest. The material attracted attention because it was the first attempt to apply scientific measurement to any phase of home economics work, and because it supplied an instrument for getting at certain facts which the writer was interested in discovering. As a result of this interest the investigations1 described in this article were undertaken. They were carried on in eight school systems in which the teachers of home economics were sufficiently interested to cooperate.2
