Reading Museums and Universities cover to cover is much like reading the presentation papers of a conference on museums and lifelong learning. Each of the fourteen essays is written by an expert on museum work, continuing education, or both. The essays vary in format, including personal narrative, case study, historic overview, and research review. Collectively, the essays provide convincing arguments for collaboration between museums and universities.   This book does not focus exclusively on "new paths" to continuing education; some essayists admit their programs are based on ideas that were implemented several decades ago. Instead, Museums and Universities offers a glimpse of two institutions described as important instruments of the nation's educational enterprise. The reader gains insight as to why universities provide opportunities for adult learners; some of these reasons coincide with museum interests in attracting adult audiences. The reader also learns that museums are a disparate group of educational institutions distinguished by their collections and exhibitions.
