In reading the re-release of Argyris’s twenty-five-year old work, two questions come to mind. First, how does this work relate to his current thinking and more recent publications? Second, how relevant is the content of the book to contemporary times? The focus of the original work is on the gap of incongruence between the individual and the organization in which that individual is embedded and on how to close the gap so that both parties increase in effectiveness. With respect to the individual, Argyris attributes the gap, in great measure, to the failure of the person to achieve psychological success—a condition directly related to the impact of the pyramidal structure on the relationship between individuals and their organizations. In other words, people at all levels are blocked from achieving psychological success because the organizational structure—that is, a pyramid—creates conditions that disallow enough opportunities to promote such a result.
