The title of this lecture, honoring one of America's foremost educational philosophers, promises a discussion of conflicting ideas in teacher education. Instead, the author presents his views on the nature of good teaching and how prospective teachers should be taught. Unhappily, he adds little to our understanding of the teaching process, nor does he present any fresh ideas to help us think more intelligently about current issues in teacher education. Mr. Scarfe contends that good teaching involves at least two consecutive activities: "The first is to put children into situations in which they naturally want to learn; the second is to make sure that what is learned becomes an educational force, by encouraging children to apply their learning and become attached to the ideas derived from learning, so that their behavior, attitudes, and actions are modified in a wise and virtuous manner."
