By 1900 women already comprised two-thirds of all public school teachers in the United States. They steadily increased their share, to 80.9 percent in 1934, notwithstanding meager wages, uncertain job security and pensions, and demeaning restrictions on their personal lives. Diane Manning’s collection of reminiscences of rural Texas teachers, Hill Country Teacher, is a companion piece, in Twayne’s Oral History Series, to Sherna Gluck’s Rosie the Riveter Revisited: Women, War, and Social Change (1987). World War II figures large in both books. Intense labor shortages accelerated a process that, today, finds even the modal white middle-class mother in the labor force, her work history closely resembling male workers’ employment in its duration through the life course. Wartime demand for teachers also destroyed whatever conventions and regulations remained that prevented married women from teaching in American public schools.
