What's Wrong With English Composition?

What is wrong with the teaching of English composition in our schools, particularly our secondary schools? Each September, the author writes, he discovers again that all but the most intelligent freshmen (whatever "intelligent" means) continue to have difficulty in writing—for that matter, often in reading and thinking as well. Whether or not instruction in how to read and write intelligently is, or should be, the sole responsibility of English teachers or even their primary concern, he shares the assumption of the man in the street that developing these skills is a fundamental part of any English program. What he has changed is the comfortable assumption that we who teach English in colleges and universities are free of blame for the fact that Johnny cannot read or write.
