Logical differences (like theological ones) which separate men cannot long withstand the will to agree. Contrariwise, the insistence on differing, whatever the motivation, is not significantly embarrassed by logical agreements. These homely truisms are abundantly manifest in the published account of this symposium, at which appeared sixteen of the most able people now at work on the academic side of the field of education. If it appears that "pure" intelligence is being demeaned by binding its direction to the psychological temper which prevails, we must remember that intelligence is not a denial of psychological set, but an inquiry into it, as well as the development of instruments for its direction. The issue of whether or not there is, or can be, a discipline of education, which is the question in Walton's essay (which begins the book), could hardly have arisen except as a psychological response to conditions in which schools...
