In 1943, Harry L. Hollingworth published a biography of his wife, Leta Stetter Hollingworth, a psychologist at Teachers College, who had died four years earlier at the age of fifty-three of abdominal cancer. Given the shortage of paper during World War II, and the government guidelines established to conserve its use, the University of Nebraska Press, which published the biography, printed only a small number of copies. For several decades the limited printing caused little inconvenience, but with the rediscovery of Leta Hollingworth’s work by scholars working in the history of psychology, women’s studies, and educational psychology, the desire to know more about this pioneering woman has grown. Ludy T. Benjamin, Jr., and Stephanie A. Fields, both of whom have written on Hollingworth, have responded by republishing Harry Hollingworth’s biography with a useful introduction that explains the significance of Leta Hollingworth’s work.
