"This history is founded on the work of scholars and specialists and is designed for the average reader," the author explains. "It is not, strictly speaking, a book for scholars; but it is as scholarly as fourteen months of research could make it." The author, Lerone Bennett, Jr., a Mississippi-born journalist and senior editor of Ebony, has developed the book from a series of articles which he wrote for that magazine. He does not pretend to be objective in the sense of being disinterested. "The story," he says, "deals with the rise and growth of slavery and segregation and the continuing efforts of Negro Americans to answer the question of the Jewish poet of captivity: 'How long shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?'"
