Composition-Wise, These Are Trying Times

The author discusses the ideas underlying a program in English composition he introduced when he chaired the Department of English at Arcadia High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. Looking on neither traditional grammar nor structural linguistics as a basis for the teaching of writing, he emphasizes prose models in increasing students' verbal repertoires and their sensitivity to the sound of words-in-context.
