This autobiography of a New Yorker's childhood and youth, passed under the un-perceived shadows of Teachers College, its Metropolitan School Study Council, its Citizenship Education Project, and equally adjacent City College, is massive documentation of Harlem sinfulness, delinquency, drug addiction, heterosexual excess and homosexual deviancy, family breakup, police graft and brutality, gang atrocities, errant fathers, sluttish mothers, casual and frequent murders, duplicitous religion, bitter cold, oppressive heat, unremitting hunger, purposeless work, purposeful theft, cockroaches and rats in the kitchen, political indifference, numbers running, drug pushing, group dynamics in mass rape, and other special attractions too numerous to mention, including the optimism that you can make it out of Harlem, that Mister Charlie and Goldberg are changing, and that Harlem is also changing for the better, in these reminiscences of a reformed hood and bopper.
