We are reprinting the first section of Henry David Aiken's essay from The New York Review of Books on the problems of the American University. Professor Aiken is, of course, a philosopher. His article goes far beyond "mere" book criticism. (We have, it happens, already published a review of Dr. Bell's book.) It seems to us that he presents a definitive overview of the crucial open problems in American higher education—the kind of overview which challenges readers to continuing, critical thought. It has become a sociological commonplace that we have been moving into a post-capitalist, even a post-industrialist era in which, along with much prestige and money, residual power now passes to the university men. From this one might infer that we also are witnessing at last the decline of the nation-state.
