    JANET TASSELL is an associate professor at Western Kentucky University in the School of Teacher Education, where she teaches elementary math methods and directs the elementary mathematics specialist endorsement program. Janet has been teaching elementary math methods courses for pre-service teachers for over ten years. Dr. Tassell teaches in the Gifted Masters/EdS programs, specifically an issues course and a course on identification and assessment of high potential learners. In the fall of 2014, she taught a semester abroad at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. She has served as the co-director of the Toyota Math and Technology Leadership Academy and as the professional development coordinator for the Javits Grant Project GEMS (Gifted Education for Math and Science) initiative for students in grades three to six. She recently led a team of 14 authors to design and author six books for first through sixth grade students to delve deeper into the Common Core Mathematics Standards and has co-published a two-book series on a real-world learning framework for lesson planning. She has researched and published in the areas of math mindfulness, action video game impact on math achievement, math teacher efficacy and anxiety, and mathematics potential for students.

    ANTONIA (TONI) SZYMANSKI, PhD, is an assistant professor of Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University. She teaches Masters courses on the psychological needs of gifted students, creativity, and how teachers can help improve students’ educational experiences. Dr. Szymanski has done extensive work regarding advanced diverse students and the ways that schools can support them. She regularly works with teachers and school districts on professional development to help teachers improve their abilities to support gifted learners in their classroom. Her research interests are gifted students’ psychological needs such as intensities and motivations, teacher training and improvement, and creativity.
