The NSSE has rendered important service to American education: in many ways, its yearbooks over the course of the last half-century chart education's recurring concerns (sometimes defensively, more often perceptively), and on occasion (perhaps, decennially) the Society has published a yearbook of major significance. Its Tenth Yearbook (The City School as a Community Center, 1911) was a major contribution; its Twenty-Eighth (Preschool and Parental Education, 1928), and its Forty-Fourth (American Education in the Postwar Period, 1945) reflected both important needs and professional anxieties. In the last twenty years the Society's yearbooks have chronicled, with some regularity, growing crisis in American education. At mid-point in the postwar era, its Fifty-Second Yearbook (The Community School, 1953) confronted, with pre-Sputnick courage and innocence, the seething social forces engulfing the school; and its current yearbook is (if not a comprehensive picture) an attempt at stocktaking, diagnosis, and assessment of the changing American school.
