Professor Fenton has done the social studies teacher, the curriculum worker, and the educator of teachers a great service in putting together a new, pertinent, knowledgeable, and useful anthology of readings on recent issues in the teaching of the social sciences. By no means is this the usual scissors-and-paste endeavor. Anthology though it may be, it has range as well as continuity, depth as well as scope. That it has continuity is due to Fenton's cogent introductions to each chapter. That it has depth is due to the significant selections he has chosen to include, a selection that even the most well-read secondary school teacher could scarcely be expected to have come upon, except in part. The book is divided into three sections entitled "Mainly Why," devoted primarily to the presentation of selections which examine educational goal taxonomy and to Bruner's concept of the role of structure in teaching; "Mainly How,"...
