General education, so popular in the prewar period, has suffered some erosion in the post-war decades. Daniel Bell, a sociologist at Columbia University, has addressed himself to this decline, especially as it concerns his own campus. He gains some perspective on Columbia by relating the problems of general education there to those at Chicago and Harvard. But what he has to say about these three is certainly relevant to many other campuses. With the encouragement of his undergraduate dean his book amounts to a one man report to the Columbia faculty. As work on the book progressed it seemed so promising an effort that the Carnegie Corporation provided funds for its completion and publication. We may begin with the widely quoted remark of Jacques Barzun, whom Bell also cites, that "the liberal arts tradition is dead or dying."
