    PATRICIA A. EDWARDS, a member of the Reading Hall Fame is a Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University. A nationally and internationally recognized expert in parent involvement, home, school, community partnerships, multicultural literacy, early literacy, and family/intergenerational literacy, especially among poor and minority children. She served as a member of the IRA Board of Directors from 19982001, and in 2006-2007 as the first African American President of the Literacy Research Association (formerly the National Reading Conference), and as President of the International Reading Association (2010-2011). She has published articles in highly refereed journals, authored two nationally acclaimed family literacy programs: Parents as Partners in Reading: A Family Literacy Training Program and Talking Your Way to Literacy: A Program to Help Nonreading Parents Prepare Their Children for Reading as well as seven books. Her books on family/parent involvement include: A Path to Follow: Learning to Listen to Parents, Tapping the Potential of Parents: A Strategic Guide to Boosting Student Achievement Through Family Involvement, Children literacy development: Making It Happen Through School, Family, and Community Involvement and New Ways to Engage Parents: Strategies and Tools for Teachers and Leaders.

    LISA DOMKE was an elementary teacher for 8 years in a school district in western Michigan. She has taught a range of grades and worked with many language learners both in general education and Spanish immersion (which involved teaching English-speakers language arts in English and Spanish and all other subjects solely in Spanish). She also worked 5 years in a summer migrant education program and has taught various undergraduate and master's literacy courses. Lisa is pursuing a Ph.D. at Michigan State University specializing in literacy, language learning, and emergent bilinguals/English language learners. Her research interests center around biliteracy--how young children develop literacy skills in multiple languages.
