Mathematics in the High School

It is firmly believed by all well-informed teachers of mathematics that their subject requires no 'special pleading.' There can be no doubt, however, that the prevailing misconception as to the real importance and the potential educational significance of the most ancient of all school subjects is a source of weakness in our educational program. Hence the attempt will be made in this article to state, however briefly and imperfectly, certain pertinent facts concerning each of the four following aspects of the question: The Universal Backgrounds of Mathematics, Mathematics as the "Universal Servant of Mankind, Mathematics as a Universal Mode of Thinking, and Mathematics as a Humanizing Element in Education.
