With a title ambiguous (it could indicate a concern with analyzing or justifying the place of general philosophy in the formal educational program) and an attitude more than faintly contemptuous of "educational philosophy" (although the author protests that his "purpose is not to discredit conventional educational philosophy"), it is surprising that this book is offered for use in courses in professional teacher education programs. This reviewer would find it, if not impossible, an extremely difficult, and almost self-defeating effort to use this as a textbook in the kind of course for which it is intended, "primarily for student teachers, and particularly for those in the senior rather than the junior stage of their professional preparation" (p. vii). This adverse judgment is made with some reluctance, since the author's condemnation of what he calls "the cult of educational implications" is most justified and much needed.
