The Analysis of Reading Instruction: Perspectives from Psychology and Linguistics

The purpose of this chapter is to deal with the problem of the application of psychological theory, not by a discursive general discussion, but by the exploration of a concrete case, namely, the teaching of reading. Despite the large amount of research and expository writing in the field of reading, the nature of reading as behavior has still not yet been accurately described in the light of knowledge from the two most relevant disciplines, psychology and linguistics.The purpose of this chapter is to deal with the problem of the application of psychological theory, not by a discursive general discussion, but by the exploration of a concrete case, namely, the teaching of reading.
