As a field of systematic, scholarly inquiry, teacher education is still in its infancy. Within this context, The Handbook of Research on Teacher Education. edited by W. Robert Houston with Martin Haberman and John Sikula, becomes a stock-taking point in the profession, an opportunity to both reflect on the distance traveled and to consider the journey yet to come. The handbook, "conceptualized and developed to provide a basis for improving the education of teachers at every level, from initial preparation, through the induction of beginners, to continued development as career professionals" (p. ix), presents broad-stroke discussions and analyses of specific topics in teacher education through forty-eight chapters loosely collected in eight sections. The apparent purpose of most handbooks is to examine a particular field in a "comprehensively general" fashion. The oxymoron serves to illustrate the difficult charge handbooks have-to cover complex subjects within the confines of a single volume.
