What is "Reading"? Some Current Concepts

During the last two decades, increased attention has been given to definitions and explanations of reading. The influence of these definitions and explanations on instructional procedures in the classroom may not be immediately apparent, but an examination of a few definitions in action will serve to indicate the impact of prevailing descriptions of reading on how and what we teach and on how we assess what our pupils have learned in reading.
