Quality of Educational Attainment, Standardized Testing, Assessment, and Accountability

by Wilbur B. Brookover, Richard J. Gigliotti, Ronald D. Henderson, Bradley E. Niles & Jeffrey M. Schneider 1974

The assessment of school outcomes and accountability for achieving appropriate outcomes are major concerns in contemporary American education. The assessment of outcomes depends largely upon the use of standardized testing devices which also have been traditionally used to identify and label individual students and predict individual performance. The contemporary demand for school assessment and accountability arises in part from the school's failure to provide high-quality education and thus equality of educational opportunity to large segments of American youth.
