Contextualizing Bilingual Education

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a background to help the reader understand the context of bilingual education for Hispanics in the United States. We will review briefly some of the history and controversies surrounding this pedagogical program, the demographics that demand it, and lastly provide a brief review of the research and theory that undergird bilingual education.
