In the last few years there has been renewed interest in the plight of disadvantaged children in the United States. After a period of near invisibility, capped by the absence of any mention of at-risk youth in A Nation at Risk, scholars and policymakers have directed attention to those youngsters with limited chances of becoming successful adults. In this volume, Joy G. Dryfoos joins the growing list of authors attempting to provide an understanding of the problems of disadvantaged youth and an awareness of the programmatic approaches available for addressing those problems. The book examines four problems experienced by at-risk youth: delinquency, substance abuse, adolescent pregnancy, and school failure and dropping out. The first section is devoted to a review of the available data detailing the prevalence of each of these problems among the current population of ten- to seventeen-year-olds.
