School as a Caring Community: A Key to Character Education

by Eric Schaps, Victor Battistich & Daniel Solomon 1997

In its early years, our work on school change rapidly evolved to address students' intellectual development as well as their social and ethical growth. We came to believe that if schools are to foster longterm learning and growth in all three of these domains, they must provide two sets of "essential conditions" to the full range of students they serve: (1) opportunities for membership in a caring community of learners; and (2) important, challenging, engaging learning opportunities. The second of these conditions is only briefly discussed below; the first is the main focus for this chapter.
