The Drill

“May I suggest an addition? It’s very short, two minutes at most. And the children expect it. We call it ‘The Drill.’ Put a problem on the board—it doesn’t matter what. The children know when they enter class to take out their notebooks and begin working on it. It helps to settle them.”

    ED BURNS worked as a homicide detective and participated in major drug enforcement investigations. After retirement he worked on the HBO television shows “The Corner,” a documentary of drug-dealing in Baltimore, and “The Wire,” a fictional treatment of the same subject. After developing “The Corner,” Burns taught at a Baltimore middle school for seven years. This essay was written expressly for publication in this volume.
