Ubiquitous Music Learning in a Postperformance World

This chapter argues for the critical engagement of the music education profession to amplify positive change. This is a pragmatic view of technological change (Hickman, 2001; Waddington, 2010) that emphasizes agency within the interplay of wants, needs, values, and practices as people change and are changed by technological innovation.

    MATTHEW D. THIBEAULT is assistant professor of music education and education (affiliate) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is on the editorial board of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education as well as Action, Criticism and Theory for Music Education. Thibeault received a BME in music education and psychology from Florida State University, and an MA and PhD in curriculum studies from Stanford University. He frequently publishes and presents on the interactions between technology, media, and music education.
