This chapter focuses on recognizing humor as a powerful resource for visitors from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are new to learning contexts, such as museums and aquariums. By using humor, visitors negotiate hybrid learning spaces, as well as gain authority in informal settings.

Dr. Ash’s main research foci are scientific sense-making in museums, classrooms, and other out-of-school settings, and enhancing access to science for students and their families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Her text, Putting Theory Into Practice: Methodologies for Informal Learning Research, Sense Publishers (2012), was co-edited with Jrčne Rahm and Leah Melber. Her most recent publication (2013) is, with Judith Lombana, Reculturing museums: Working toward diversity in informal settings, Journal of Museum Education, 38(1), 69–80.
