Creative "Garages" for Community and Economic Youth Development

This chapter examines models of youth-based enterprises in which adolescents take leadership in organizational roles, creative design, and community building. Central to this work is the need for both public and private creative input and financing to develop and support learning environments that engage adolescents in extended projects based in science and art that are socially beneficial to local communities.

    SHIRLEY BRICE HEATH, Margery Bailey Professor of Dramatic Literature and English and Professor of Linguistics, Emerita, Stanford University, is known for her longitudinal studies of the language, culture, and learning habits of families and communities. She is the author of the classic Ways With Words: Language, Life, and Work in Communities and Classrooms (1983/1996). Her volume, Words at Work and Play: Three Decades in Family and Community Life (2012), traces family histories across economic and social changes. This work and many of her articles document the role of community organizations in the lives of young people in need of creative, challenging learning environments beyond the school day.
