    ANN M. AVILES, PhD, holds Bachelorís and Masterís of Science degrees in the field of occupational therapy, and completed her doctorate in the Educational Policy Studies program, with an emphasis on Social Foundations in Urban Education, from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Most recently Dr. Aviles authored a book, From Charity to Equity: Race, Homelessness and Urban Schools (2015) with Teachers College Press. Dr. Aviles has taught in the areas of action research in education, history and philosophy of education, child development and learning, educational policies in urban America and Latino/a students in Chicago Public Schools. Her work aims to understand the intersections of class and race among youth experiencing housing instability and the manner in which these factors may influence educational policy formation and implementation among youth of color experiencing housing instability/homelessness. Her research focuses on examining policies, services and programs that impact the educational opportunities and mental health of homeless youth of color. Her research also addresses the topics of Latino/a Education, Education Policy, Educational equity, School-Community partnerships, Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, Youth development, and Mental Health. Dr. Avilesí recent works include: Homeless Youth of Color in Chicago, Illinois: Access Denied. Shadow Report, International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) (2014); and Homeless Educational Policy: Exploring a Racialized Discourse through a Critical Race Theory Lens in Urban Education (2015). She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Educational Foundations program at Northeastern Illinois University and is an activist scholar advocating for educational and human rights.
