This is another volume in the uniformly high-quality Education in Large Cities Series. The series is based upon studies underwritten by the Carnegie Corporation and carried out under the auspices of Syracuse University's Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. The author reports on, and generalizes from, studies of the organizational influence exercised by AFT and NEA affiliates in New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Atlanta. (The AFT is not strongly represented in Atlanta, and thus its influence there is not reported upon.) The work is in the tradition of many earlier studies of the way in which special or vested interest groups organize and how their differential influences are to be explained. But the present study is especially significant for several reasons. For one thing, it is one of the most thorough, empirical, and scholarly studies of current AFT-NEA militancy in large urban areas.
