    THOMAS BEATTY, PhD, is a faculty member in the Department of Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University whose research examines principal support networks. He is a former Executive Director of Secondary Education for an urban school division in Virginia where he also served as a principal at both the middle and high school levels. When he was principal of Richmond Community High School, it was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top high schools in the country. Dr. Beatty continues to build capacity for leadership by training students for leadership positions in schools, central office, universities, and other educational settings. He received his doctorate from The College of William and Mary.

    AUTUMN CYPRÈS is the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a former school principal whose research examines the politics of school leadership and school reform. Her contributions as a principal include the desegregation of a school and the implementation of a school wide dual language program. In addition to her books, Dr. Cyprès' work can be found in tier one journals for scholars and practicing school leaders such as Educational Administration Quarterly, Kappan, and Educational Leadership. She received her doctorate from Arizona Sate University in 1996.
