P. L. THOMAS, Associate Professor of Education (Furman University, Greenville, SC), is Faculty Director, First Year Seminars, and a column editor for English Journal. His primary areas of scholarship include teaching writing, the intersection of poverty and education, and education policy. He edits a series for Sense Publishers, and has edited and co-edited several recent volumes: James Baldwin: Challenging Authors, with A. Scott Henderson (Sense, 2014), Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction: Challenging Genres (Sense, 2013), De-Testing and De-Grading Schools, with Joe Bower (Peter Lang USA, 2013), and Becoming and Being a Teacher (Peter Lang USA, 2013).
