A World Of Our Own is an angry book. Peter Prescott states in the preface that "no one at Choate has approved this book," and it is unlikely that anyone in power at the Connecticut boarding school will approve it, for A World Of Our Own painstakingly, sometimes tediously, recounts episode after episode which indicts the school. Prescott views Choate's approach to education as unrealistic, hypocritical, and repressive, and through extensive examples he builds his case. The book is divided into two parts, "The Situation" and "The Crisis," and covers the major part of one school year when Prescott, a graduate of Choate, was given permission to visit extensively and talk with teachers, administrators, faculty wives, and students. The author, a sharp observer, creates with extensive quotations from members of the school an unflattering picture. Prescott professes an objectivity he finds it hard to maintain; the more he learns about the school, the less he likes it. He describes two delightful masters who understand boys and...
