    APRIL BURKE is a Ph.D. student in Literacy and Language Education at Purdue University. Her research interests include the testing and assessment of English learners (ELs) and the impact of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) on public education in the United States. She is currently investigating how the NCLB policies related to high-stakes testing are affecting an Indiana school corporation with a large EL population. April has two publications in press: a chapter titled “The Unintended Consequences of No Child Left Behind on an Indiana School Corporation: Implications for English Language Learner Advocates” in Teacher Education for Social Justice: Perspectives and Lessons Learned (Information Age Publishing) and an article co-authored with Luciana C. de Oliveira titled “Educational Policies in the United States and Implications for English Learners” to be published in the Brazilian Journal of Applied Linguistics (Revista Brasileira de Linguistica Aplicada).
