Cynthia Taines (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin) is an assistant professor in the Foundations of Education program at Northern Illinois University. She is a sociologist of education with a broad interest in urban education and students’ school experiences. Her research focuses on students’ perspectives of schooling, youth activism for school reform, and urban-suburban dialogue. Her most recent publications include, “Educational or Social Reform? Students Inform the Debate Over Improving Urban Schools” (Education and Urban Society, in press) and “Intervening in Alienation: The Outcomes for Urban Youth of Participating in School Activism” (American Educational Research Journal, in press).
