How well it informs, how richly it evokes, makes a book valuable. One wants a history book to inform of a past era taken in its own terms, not merely as a prelude to the present nor as propaganda. He also wants a history book to evoke speculation as to how the past became present, and at least by analogy, he wants it to evoke new possibilities for understanding the current social universe. As a source of information about the past, Cremin's book is superb; my measure of its evocative strength is the many passages into speculation and imagination it opened. I shall have to gather much more information and converse at length with Cremin before I have consumed what he has here to offer. I suspect historians who want to understand the American experience will be returning to Cremin for several generations. The book may well become a classic.
