This book is the most comprehensive work on games that I have seen. A variety of highly competent professional games scholars and users—historians, anthropol­ogists, military analysts, educators, and psychologists—describe the historical and anthropological source of games, typical recreational games, as well as games used   in   business, research, education, therapy, and war. The book succeeds in organizing much reference material into useful reading lists, indexes, and bibliographies. While the references are not completely up-to-date, they are the most comprehensive currently published in a single volume. Both the interested amateur and the professional can find much to enjoy and apply from this book. As a professional designer and user of games, I was delighted to see how much I could learn from it, while still noting the inclusion of some classic pieces in the field. The book is con­veniently organized into short chapters on most significant aspects of games so the interested reader can either browse through it, focusing on a particular source or using what interests him, or read...
