We live and teach in dangerous and difficult times. Injustice, environmental degradation, racism, and unspeakable poverty abound in the midst of obscene wealth, wars, death, and destruction. Zembylas’ The Politics of Trauma in Education is a contribution to ongoing conversations about what teachers can and should do about the state we’re in. Zembylas addresses this question as a Greek-Cypriot teacher educator who was taught in childhood to hate and distrust his Turkish-Cypriot countrymen and women. Two chapters are co-written with Zvi Bekerman, an Israeli, who also wrote the forward. Beckerman, like Zembylas, a member of a “divided society,” was socialized into a totalizing narrative that justified the existence of the state of Israel and silenced all other voices.
