A number of years ago, there was an attempt to introduce a new and stronger breed of grain into a rather "primitive" village. The American technicians approached the headman and told him to gather fifteen or twenty of his close neighbors to clear a field, plant and nurture the grain. No work was done, the experiment failed, and an anthropologist was called in to help solve the problem. He took a small plane and flew over the land. When he returned he asked the headman to invite his wife's uncles and brothers to help with the work. The uncles and brothers were from a more distant part of the village. What the anthropologist had seen from the air was the pattern of beaten paths which led from the headman's hut across the village to those more distant huts.
