Stop High-Stakes Testing: An Appeal to America’s Conscience is, as the title suggests, an appeal to readers to do whatever they can to stop high-stakes testing. But it is more specifically an appeal to readers, including politicians and policy makers, to address the very real, historically situated, socio-political problems that inhibit student learning. In my opinion, a title which more effectively captures its essence might be The Call for a Renewed War on Poverty: Why Marginalized Students in America’s Public Schools Fail High-Stakes Tests. The best parts of the book include the following: Chapter 2 – Chronic Racism in which Johnson, Johnson, Farenga and Ness provide an historical and well-grounded account of the roots of racism from slavery through the modern day school house; Chapter 3 – The Excluded Class: Poverty, Race, and Social Class in which the authors explore the very real disparities between the poor and rich and...
