Adult education in the United States at present is an endeavor that is said to enlist over 27,000,000 persons. Only in the last decade and a half has it been a nationally organized movement, although there has been adult education in the United States for well over a century under both public school and private auspices. The term has come to be defined as including "all the activities with an educational purpose that are carried on by people engaged in the ordinary business of life."
